MIDWIVES

MADELEINE wisner LM

Picture
Madeleine began attending births as a doula in 2010. She enrolled in midwifery school in 2013, and her clinical training included working in a freestanding birth center for Medi-Cal families in Sacramento, working in home birth practices in Sacramento and Modesto, and working in several birth centers in Utah.

She attended Midwives College of Utah (Salt Lake City, UT) and the National College of Midwifery (Taos, NM), two accredited, California Medical Board-approved midwifery education programs. She also attended American Public University and studied Public Health. She was privileged to work alongside and learn from Certified Professional Midwives, Certified Nurse-Midwives, Obstetricians, and Pediatricians through the course of her midwifery training.

Madeleine holds an Associate Degree of Science in Midwifery from the National College of Midwifery. She has been licensed to provide midwifery care in California since 2017 and is certified by the North American Registry of Midwives. She holds current certifications in Neonatal Resuscitation and Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.

Through her experiences working with childbearing families, she has come to respect pregnancy and childbirth as an intense and transformative process for all who participate. Each birth is unique and special, and demands individualized care and attention. It is Madeleine's hope that every family can have a positive and memorable adventure bringing life into the world, and she is privileged to provide her experience, support, and encouragement to clients as a member of their healthcare team.

In addition to attending births as a midwife, Madeleine is committed to increasing access to health services for underserved community members. She sits on several boards advocating for the health and dignity of pregnant people and children in her region. She is especially passionate about creating respectful, affordable, and clinically excellent training sites for student midwives and other future healthcare providers.

Madeleine is currently a clinical and academic instructor for midwifery students through Welcome Home Midwifery Services.

Madeleine loves cooking for friends, reading, and sleeping in.
She lives in Sacramento with her spouse and Dennis Hopper, her pet bunny.

I began my journey as a midwife when I was pregnant with my second child. My first birth in the hospital had been both traumatic and disappointing. I wanted to have more control of my birth experience this time. I started researching home birth and looking for midwives in my area. The closest midwife supporting homebirths was three hours away, but I was determined and decided to make the trip.

After three or four visits, she asked me if I had ever thought about becoming a home birth midwife. That question lit a spark within me. I was completely consumed. I couldn't think about anything else. I began attending midwifery classes and started apprenticing with my midwife within a few weeks, driving back and forth from San Luis Obispo to Santa Sruz for over three years. I also had the honor of attending births with a local doctor who believed that women possessed innate knowledge of how to give birth, and that most of the time, if we just left them alone and didn't intervene, they would give birth naturally without complications.

I am a California Licensed Midwife though the California Medical Board, as well as a Certified Professional Midwife through the North American Registry of Midwives. I started my midwifery home birth practice in San Luis Obispo. After twenty-five years in practice there, I moved to Napa, California, where I practiced for another twelve years. I now live in Sacramento and am enjoying getting to know the community here.

My job as your midwife is to guide, educate, and support you to help you make the best choices for you and your family. If you are transferred during labor or birth to the hospital, my job is to make that transition as smooth as possible. I will be with you through that process ensuring you are informed of your choices and help you to make the best decisions possible.

I have attended over a thousand births: some in homes, some in birth centers, and some at the hospital.

Through those experiences, I have learned how important a woman's birth is. Having control, choosing where, how, and with whom she gives birth not only empowers a mother, but it increases her self-esteem and transforms her. It improves her bonding and attachment to her baby and family. It makes her a better parent and mother. Giving birth is like a drop of water falling in a large body of water: the ripples or effects will be felt for generations.
